News Release Issue Date: 24 February 2014 CHANGES TO GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS

News Release

Issue Date: 24 February 2014

CHANGES TO GARDEN WASTE COLLECTIONS   FROM 10 MARCH 2014, Broxtowe Borough Council will be introducing a small charge for garden waste collections. Leaflets have been issued to local residents. Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Richard Robinson said: “Regrettably, the Council has decided that in order to balance its books it can no longer find the funding to offer a free garden waste collection service. “Garden waste collection is not a compulsory service and the recent tough budget cuts have meant we have had to review this to make necessary savings. Broxtowe is one of the last Council’s in the local area to make this decision and start charging.”

“Although there will be a charge for garden waste collections, residents will benefit from an extended all year round, fortnightly service, which at £1.25 per collection is great value for money.”

Garden waste will only be collected from brown-lidded bins. For residents already in possession of brown-lidded bins the fee is £20 service charge for any number of brown-lidded bins (First year only and thereafter at the full rate per bin). For those requiring a brown lidded bin and service the fee is £30.

Additional bins are available at £10 each.

Residents who would like the Council to collect their garden waste can do so in the following ways:

You can sign up to the service by using the online ‘Garden Waste Service Form’ using this link www.broxtowe.gov.uk/gardenwasteform

  • Registering at one of the Council’s cash offices in Beeston, Eastwood and Stapleford
  • By credit or debit card by contacting 0115 917 7777
  • Or by returning the reply slip with a cheque, (reply slip) provided on the leaflet currently being delivered to households in the borough

Residents are being advised not to use their green-lidded bin for garden waste as it will not be collected.

Collections will be fortnightly on the same day as the green-lidded bin is emptied March – November inclusive and additional monthly collections December to February. Exact dates for the additional collections will be confirmed shortly.

The garden collection dates on existing calendars no longer apply.

SANDBAGS ON STANDBY TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS

SANDBAGS ON STANDBY TO HELP FLOOD VICTIMS

AS THE UK TRIES to recover from an “almost unparalleled” flooding crisis, winds of over 100mph and one of the wettest winters on record so far, forecasters warned that there is yet more severe weather to come.

Broxtowe Borough Council in Nottingham via the Department of Communities and Local Government has advised COBRA, the government’s national emergencies committee that they could provide 1000 sandbags if necessary to help with the flooding emergency.

“This is a major emergency and our sympathies go out to all those who have been effected.  We are also prepared to do our bit to help if we can, said Councillor Milan Radulovic, Leader of Broxtowe Borough Council.

“Sandbags can provide a short term and relatively cheap way to manage flooding, but only if they are filled and placed correctly so we are pleased to be able to help if needed, even if it’s only in a small way.”

The severe weather is set to continue and the Council has also updated its own severe weather pages to provide the public with useful information should there be local problems. Visit the website at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=8223  to find out more.

In the event of heavy rain and rising water levels, the public are urged to monitor the situation at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods or contact the Environment Agency Flood Line on 0845 988 1188 for up to date information on flooding levels nationally.
